THE PILATES PHENOMENON
With the aging of our population and the increasing trend toward
mindful, moderate health practices, Pilates is shaping the fitness
ideals of our next generation. When practiced faithfully, Pilates
yields numerous health benefits, including increased lung capacity,
circulation, strength, flexibility (particularly in the core), posture
and balance.
In the early 1900s, Joseph Pilates devised
a system of exercises done on the floor, called “matwork”,
which we have been practicing at the Club. Later, during WWI, he
developed equipment to rehabilitate his “patients”,
taking springs from the beds and rigging them to create spring
resistance.

Pilates equipment today is similar to that of long
ago. Spring tensions, straps to hold feet or hands, supports for
the back, neck and shoulders, are as important now as then. The
equipment challenges and supports the body at the same time that
one learns to move more efficiently.
Our studio offers
Pilates excercises on 4 deluxe reformers (which convert to table
trapeze), one complete table trapeze, 2 chairs, and a variety of
barrels.
Private and small group training is available at
members' convenience. Each client must have no less than 4 hours
of private training. Our staff is certified by institutions accredited
and recognized by the
PMA, the Pilates Method Alliance.
Group mat classes are also available. Please see the Group Fitness schedule for days and times.
